During this week we have decided to put all our attention to the mechanical part of the project and the bar code scanner system.
Mechanical Part
After we received the parts (gears and screws) from the machine shop, we started to put pieces together and assemble the mechanism of the system. We have decided to use chains for the rotational part due to its stability and high resistance. The pictures below illustrate the finished carousel mechanism with a tray plug into it. The only part missing in our pictures is the connection of the motor, which will be shown in further weeks.
Bar code Scanner
As we were working on the bar code scanner, we have realized that there are more parts that we are going to need in order for the Arduino to receive the signals as well as turning it on and off. The part we are needing is called a USB Host Shield for Arduinos.
The purpose of the shield is to control the scanner since it sends the data via a USB cable and provide enough current to the scanner since the Arduino Uno does not provide enough for it. Also, the shield will image the scanner as a keyboard so that the Arduino can recognize the characters coming from the scanner. Please find below of the bar code scanner we are using to accomplish this part.
